Types of HVAC Systems

HVAC systems are becoming a major necessity for both residential and commercial operations. They provide both heating and cooling functions that allow homeowners and managers to set interior temperatures to a comfortable level for their activities. There are various types of HVAC systems on the market that you can choose from.

Types of HVAC Systems

Single Vs. Multi-Stage Systems

The first aspect of HVAC systems that you need to understand is the difference between a single and a multi-stage system. You'll find single-stage systems in areas that are humid and those that are extremely cold. These systems have only one stage that is known as running at full capacity.

Multi-stage systems, on the other hand, allow for various levels of heating or cooling operations at different energy draw levels. Therefore, a multi-stage system can allow the homeowner to set more energy-efficient heating or cooling levels. Instead of just being in the ON position, the HVAC system can be set at a low, mid, or high energy consumption setting.

Zone Systems

One fairly newer type of HVAC system option is zoning systems. These work to heat or cool an individual room or area of your home. These can work by controlling zone valves or dampers that are inside of your ductwork. Or, they can be controlled by individual ductless heating or cooling units that are mounted on the wall of the individual room.

These zoning systems are especially helpful for homes that can benefit from only heating or cooling a partial area, such as the living and bedrooms. Spaces like spare bedrooms or unused empty rooms can be omitted from heating or cooling with zoned systems. This is helpful to save homeowners money on their energy bills throughout the year.

Humidity Control Options

When choosing a commercial or residential HVAC unit, you should consider opting for one with humidity control. Both dehumidifiers and humidifiers can be added to the HVAC system for those who live in an extremely humid climate. At the touch of a button, these systems will allow you to control the humidity level inside your home or building.

Heat Pumps

One of the hottest items on the market today is geothermal heat pumps. This is due to their low energy usage and government tax breaks. Heat pumps work to both heat and cool residential and commercial spaces with ease. They work to essentially transport hot air outside in the summer and hot air inside during the cold winter months. While heat pumps do tend to come at a high initial cost, they pay for themselves over and over with the amount of energy savings that you'll receive from running them.
