HVAC Tips for Every Home

Spring is here and now’s the time to check that your system is performing and that’s why we put together some HVAC tips to help. At Command Service Center, we want to help you and your loved ones stay comfortable all year round. These tips should help you maintain your HVAC unit on your own, but we always advise speaking with a professional if you notice more serious issues.

HVAC Tips for Every Home

Change the Filters

We can’t stress this enough. Not only should changing the filters in the furnace and air conditioning units be done regularly, but it’s very easy for a lay person to do. Some filters can be washed, dried or replaced while others are temporary and need regular replacing. A clean filter saves the homeowner an amazing amount of money during the cooling season.

Clear Away Obstructions

As the days grow longer and warmer, weeds will start to spring up around an outdoor air conditioner's condenser unit. There may also be twigs, dead leaves, seeds, nuts and other debris. All of this needs to be cleared away to at least two feet from the condenser unit. Blockages prevent the unit from pulling in air. This makes it work harder and shortens its life.

Clear Air Conditioner’s Condensate Drain

If the condensate drain on a central AC or room unit AC is clogged, it needs to be cleaned out. Sometimes all that this needs is an unbent paper clip. The drain also needs to be placed at the right angle so that the condensate can properly drain. You might need to call in a HVAC professional to make sure the unit is at the right pitch for the drain to work properly.

Dry Out the humidifier

This tip is also easy for you to perform as part of regular home maintenance. The casing should be taken off of the humidifier, and it should be allowed to dry out. After it’s completely dry, it needs to be thoroughly vacuumed before it is put back into use.

Add a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat saves time and money by adjusting the temperature for different times of the day. In the summer, it can be set at a higher temperature while the house is empty then programmed to lower the temperature just before everyone comes home. A smart thermostat communicates with the internet, so its setting can be made remotely over the homeowner’s cell phone.

Make Sure All Units Are Level

Units that aren’t level don’t work as well as they should, so this should be checked now. You may need to use a spirit level and some shims to make sure that the units are on level ground. Some units come with adjustable feet.

These are some of the troubleshooting tips that will keep a home cool and comfortable throughout the warmer months. Best of all, they can be done by the homeowner, though it's also a good idea to call a professional for a seasonal inspection. Contact Command Service Center today for more tips.
