Heating and cooling systems use a lot of energy. The right HVAC system will save you a significant amount of money every month. There are three common heating sources, and you have several options in each category. However, each option might not be ideal for your home. An HVAC professional can help you find an affordable and efficient heating system.

Boiler vs. Furnace vs. Heat Pump: What's the Difference?

Boiler

A boiler can use electricity, natural gas, oil or an alternative fuel. It can be used for radiant floor systems. The fuel is transformed into steam or hot water. The radiator circulates the heat throughout the home.

Advantages
  • A boiler heating system requires minimal maintenance.
  • This heating system does not spread dust or allergens.
  • It is quieter than other heating methods.
Disadvantages
  • The air filters must be cleaned on a regular basis.
  • You may need an air conditioning system to cool your home in the summer.
  • This heating method can circulate allergens throughout your home.

Heat Pump

A heat pump gathers heat from water, air or the ground. Air pushes the heat throughout your home. This heating method is similar to a furnace. When the weather is cold, the heat pump collects air. It circulates warm air throughout the home. When the weather is hot, the heat pump collects hot air. It pushes the heat out of your home. Heat pumps are best for moderate climates.

Advantages
  • Heat pumps are very energy efficient.
  • You do not need a separate air conditioning system when your home has a heat pump.
  • Heat pumps can remove allergens from the air.
Disadvantages
  • Heat pumps might not provide enough warmth for homes in cold climates.
  • Air source heat pumps require additional HVAC equipment.
  • The fans, coils and filters must be cleaned on a regular basis.
