5 Common HVAC Problems During the Winter

The cold winds of winter bring special challenges for keeping your home warm and comfortable. Certain HVAC problems occur almost exclusively due to the cold weather. Let's learn about some common HVAC issues you may face this winter.

5 Common HVAC Problems During the Winter

#1 Pipes and Coils Freeze

Cold temperatures can freeze water inside pipes and coils. This prevents the heating system from working properly, leaving the house cold and uncomfortable. What's worse, the frozen water can expand, causing the pipe or coil to burst. That's an expensive emergency repair. If you suspect that you have frozen water preventing your heating system from working, call for professional HVAC help immediately. You should turn off the source of water while waiting for the repairman to show up.

#2 Some Rooms Are Colder Than Others

You find that some rooms in your home are noticeably colder than others. The heating system may not be doing its job properly. An HVAC professional can find the problem for you. >The blower motor on the heating system may not be doing its job properly. You may have a dirty air filter that's preventing the system from heating efficiently. It may not be the heating system at all. You may have air leaks around doors and windows letting cold air in.

#3 Air Filters Get Dirty

If you heat with a forced air furnace or heat pump, you need a clean air filter in place. The air filter helps keep dust from entering the inside of the heating unit, which keeps it running efficiently. When the filter becomes clogged, air cannot flow freely. This causes the heating system to work harder. This leads to the system overheating and shutting down prematurely. Check your filters at least once a month. Replace or clean them as needed to keep the air flowing freely.

#4 Thermostats Break

Thermostats regulate the heating system. If the thermostat isn't working properly, the heating system won't work as expected. The thermostat may need to be cleaned and calibrated. Or it may need to be replaced. If you need to replace the thermostat, it's a good time to upgrade to a programmable model.

#5 Pilot Light Won't Ignite

Heating systems that run on gas or propane require a pilot light to ignite properly. Some older systems have a pilot light running constantly, while others turn the pilot on when the system starts. If the pilot light isn’t turning on, the flame sensor may be dirty or damaged. A heating pro can clean or replace it as needed.
